Calcium Carbide Testing: Ensuring Accuracy in Detecting Dampness

Understanding moisture content in walls is crucial for identifying structural dampness. The calcium carbide 'speedy' test offers a more accurate assessment than traditional electrical damp meters, which can produce false readings due to conductive salts. However, executing this test correctly is essential to obtain reliable results.

Why Calcium Carbide Testing?

This test is recognised for its precision in detecting moisture by measuring acetylene gas produced when calcium carbide reacts with moisture in a sample. A reading of 5% or more typically confirms structural dampness. Yet, many tests fail due to improper sampling techniques.

Proper Testing Procedure

To achieve accurate results, our experts follow a meticulous process:

  • Skirting Board Removal: Using an oscillating multitool, we carefully remove a section of the skirting board to expose the plaster beneath.

  • Sample Collection: We hack off plaster to access the mortar joint closest to the floor. Using a 9mm drill bit at a slow speed, we collect samples to avoid drying them through heat.

  • Material Handling: According to BRE Digest 245 guidelines, we discard the first 10mm of drilled material and collect the necessary sample from 10mm onwards, using calibrated digital scales for precision.

Common Pitfalls

Incorrect methods, such as taking samples above skirting boards or using high-speed drilling, often lead to inaccurate results. such practices miss critical moisture at the floor-wall junction, potentially overlooking structural dampness.

Conclusion

Accurate calcium carbide testing is vial for correctly identifying structural dampness. By adhering to proven methods, we ensure reliable results that support effective damp management and resolution.
